This week we are ranking out favorite characters in the Game of Thrones series for 5th place to 1st place. I really love Game of Thrones and it’s been a year since I was introduced to the brilliant world of George RR Martin. Since we have to wait until 2019 for the new season, why not start out our year paying tribute to the characters that we know and love! You can read all of my Season 7 recap posts by clicking here! If you haven’t watched Game of Thrones, there will be mild spoilers in my post so this is your official *Spoiler Alert, Spoiler!”

Now onto the Rankings…

#5 Eddard (Ned) Stark –

ned stark

The Patriarch of House Stark has to make my list of favorite characters. This may be a surprise pick to many, but let me explain why Ned is on my list and should be on everyone else’s list! Ned is the ultimate “good guy” in the Game of thrones series. He is humble, loyal and a great person to have on your side as an ally. Ned is one of the strongest driving forces in GOT. Think about it, most of the action is driven by the 2 strongest families, the Starks and the Lannisters fighting each other. Ned’s death puts the Starks on a path of revenge against the Lannisters and in my opinion, strengthens the entire clan. If it wasn’t for Ned and his discoveries, along with his death, we would not have a Game of Thrones show.

#4 Cersei Lannister –

So we’ve been down this road before with my love of villains. A great villain drives the story and adds the tension that propels our heroes to new heights. Cersei is probably one of the better villains ever portrayed. She is smart and ruthless, 2 deadly combinations. I have this debate with my friend Erick that Cersei is the smartest person in the show, he argues that her father Tywin was. I think that Cersei has committed unspeakable atrocities and she is the one that is prolonging her family’s name. Tywin set the framework, but Cersei was the warrior that kept the wolves at bay. I think that Cersei will make a cameo in our Memoirs of a Villain segment very soon ;).

#3 Jon Snow/ Daenerys –

So I cheated a bit and combined Jon Snow with Daenerys. I personally feel that these 2 characters represent the same thing and are essentially the same. Both are striving for a new world of peace and equality. I thought about putting these 2 higher up on the list but I felt as though it’s a common thing to say Jon Snow or Daenerys and I wanted to provide a bit more diversity in this post. Jon is probably my favorite of the 2 because he’s brave, humble and he helps out the people in need, even when it could cost him dearly. Both Jon and Dany grew up in the shadows of their families, Jon for being a bastard born to a high noble house and Dany for being a displaced monarch on the run from the usurpers of her family’s throne.

#2 Sandor Clegane (The Hound) –

The Hound is one of my favorite characters in the GOT series. His character most closely reminds me of what commoners personalities would have been in the Medieval time period. Think about it, most of the characters in the show are privileged, Sandor used his rage and strength to  the best of his abilities and became the personal guard of the Hound. Yes, he had to execute characters that did not deserve it, but he was being loyal to his prince. We see signs that the Hound isn’t as evil as we thought when he would save Sansa, try to talk sense into Geoffrey and when he looked after Arya. The Hound is awesome and his dry humor makes the show that much better.

#1 Arya Stark –

This is probably no surprise as I think most people would place Arya in their top 5. She is the Stark that is bound by a different sense of honor. She still respectes the morals of her father Ned, but she has a higher sense of honor to herself. Arya believes that exterminating those who corrupt the realm is the best course of action. She doesn’t engage them to make truces and she doesn’t fall for the tricks of her enemies. Arya gets things done and if it be through slitting their throats after they have eaten pieces of their kin (Walder Frey), so be it.

Those are my favorite characters in Game of Thrones! Which characters are your favorites? List your top 5 Game of Thrones rankings to join the community board that will be posted in next week’s post. Let’s talk favorite characters!

    1. Tormund is definitely an honorable mention for me. He is the best ginger in the game! Plus, I want to see him and Brienne get together lol. Thanks for commenting!

      1. It is amazing how they turned a bit character into someone that most everyone cares about. That man better have survived that last episode!

      2. Yea, I was on the edge of my seat about to vomit. I was upset because the Hound, Tormund, Jon, most of my faves were all trekking out together and from a traumatic exposure to George RR Martin, you’d expect most of them to be killed lol.

    1. Fantastic list! There are sooo many great characters in GOT that I’m surprised we are all narrowing down our top favorites. I love seeing Tyrion and Brienne in your list. It’s a shame I didn’t play them in my top 5 but there are just so many great characters on either side lol. Thanks for dropping by!

  1. I got so excited when I saw that this post was a GoT post. lol I seriously love this show (and the books!) <3 I really enjoyed reading your picks, and I'm pumped about a possible Cersei Memoirs of a Villain post. 😀
I'm soooo terrible at picking faves for things since they often fluctuate for me, but here's my best stab at consistent faves for the show, season to season. It was so hard to pick since there are so many amazing characters in this series, but here goes:
5.) Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance OWNED this role!) 😀
    4.) The Hound (Sandor Clegane)
    3.) Daenerys Targaryen
    2.) Tyrion Lannister
    1.) Arya Stark

    1. Hi! I know, I’ve been thinking of doing Cersei for a while now but I have yet to pull the trigger. I’m sure it will come soon enough lol. It’s very hard to choose but that’s what makes the rankings post fun! My co-worker Erick would hug you for having Tywin in your top 5. Tywin is a great character and you’re right, Charles did an excellent job with him! I love seeing the Hound on your list as well as he could’ve been number 1 for me lol. He’s just so cocky but realistic, he’s blunt but caring, seeing the development in the Hound’s character throughout the seasons has been one of my favorite moments.

  2. Ah this is so awesome. Hm, I’ve never thought of them as a countdown before. Maybe I’ll do them in order then reverse it lol.

    5. Jon Snow

    4. Sansa Stark

    3. Brienne of Tarth

    2. Daenerys Targaryen – Silver hair, god complex, can walk through fire. What’s not to love? 😉

    1. Tyrion Lannister – This might be fore narcissistic reasons because I just relate to him so much. He does the “wear your heart on your sleeve, but try to pretend you don’t by using morbid humor” and I’m here for it. He constantly trusts the wrong people and gets his heart broken, though “trust the wrong” people is relative…like literally relative, because he had some trust in his family at one point. I love that he’s clever and witty, but not flawless. Like all of the other characters, his morality is grey.

    1. I really love Tyrion. He is a cynic, but he is one with hope for a better future. Tyrion knows privilege and he knows what it is to be an outcast, he will make a lot of people’s list for sure. I am curious as to why you selected Sansa? She’s on a few lists as well but I found her annoying in the first few seasons.

      1. I’m sued to people not liking her lol. I like what she represents in the scheme of the story and that’s the breakdown of courtly and romantic love. Sansa is pretty much a Disney princess stuck in this harsh, brutal world, and Martin uses her to show how ideas like this are unrealistic and don’t work. I like that she learns from the horrible things that happen to her and she shows that it’s possible to be feminine and still be strong. Lots of people like Arya and Brienne who break the feminine mold/don’t fit into it, but Sansa is both the opposite of them and the opposite of Cersei insofar as she’s not malicious or power hungry for the sake of power. I could write a dissertation on Cersei and why she’s the way she is lol. She’s one of the most misogynistic women I’ve ever seen or read in literature.

      2. I understand Sansa’s story but she still angers me. Not as much now as in the first few season. Her transformation was evident along the seasons but I still find her doing things that just annoy me. I can’t explain it lol. I really loved her in the last season though. She made sure to be the smarter person in the end and it worked out well.

      3. I look at it in terms of “How would an 11 year old who’d been raised from birth to know she was going to be the lady of a household act?” All of the things she get flak for are completely typical of someone of that age. Even her ratting out her sister for Joffrey. There’s no way she could’ve known how truly horrible he was looking at him through the lens of a love struck preteen. He’s the “handsome prince” of the story. I get why some people don’t find her as interesting as other characters though.

      4. I agree that her actions aren’t far fetched at all, but it still annoys me lol. Probably because I try to indentify with characters (and I’m super emotional) so I wouldn’t see myself making the same choices. It’s easy for me to say that but who knows how I would really feel in the moment. I’d like to think that I wouldn’t sell my sister out for a boy I liked haha.

      5. I thought about the situation she was in and how she was raised, and she probably didn’t consider how dire the consequences would be for her actions, because she didn’t have any way of knowing. She probably thought Arya might get yelled at, but not that innocents would die. Even her selling out her father is suspect, too, because regardless of what Sansa did or said, Eddard had kind of doomed himself, and again, she was still naive enough to believe that Cersei was a good person and wouldn’t really kill her father, and actually Cersei had no intention of doing that, but she couldn’t control her son. She’s not the most exciting character in the story, but I think GRRM is using subtlety to show how rotten the idea of courtly love really is.

  3. I love your choices! OK, here are are my top five:
    5. Sansa Stark.
    4. Brienne of Tarth.
    3. Daenerys Targaryen.
    2. Arya Stark.
    1. Tyrion Lannister.

    1. Thanks Thero! Oh I wanted to tell you I tried my first humble bumble subscription because Civilization 6 was the first game lol. Tyrion is an awesome choice and I’m surprised he didn’t make my list. Eh… Sansa lol. I did start to like her more during the Ramsey Bolton days (which Ramsey played a great part in making me hate him! Maybe I should do a most hated one of these lol). Thanks for sharing!

      1. That’s great to hear! Let’s hope that the rest of the bundle lives up to your expectations! Its funny, I started the series really disliking Sansa, but something happened and she stopped being annoying. I guess I find her character arc a little more interesting than some of the other characters. I was surprised that you didn’t include Tyrion. after the scene where he slapped Joffery, he could do no wrong in my eyes.

  4. So many to choose from..

    5. Jamie Lannister
    4.Davos Seaworth
    3.Daenerys Targaryen
    2.Tormund Giantsbane
    1.The Hound

So many others could’ve made this list

    1. I knowww! There are so many great characters like Lady Mormount the cheeky little girl from Bear Island, Elena Tyrell probably the smartest and most cunning character in the series and as you mentioned Davos! This was a fun one, but I love so many characters haha. Love seeing Tormund on your list as well, best Ginger in the world! Thanks for commenting!

  5. To me Jon is so overrated. He has not changed much in the seasons. I thought he would have learnt some lessons having been stabbed to death then resurrected. Although I like his sense of compassion he does not seem to have learnt much from his past mistakes. Dany I quite like her but I think she is a bit overrated to. However I thought that she got rather extreme when she burnt Sam’s dad and brother. Ok the dad is one thing, he is pretty awful but the brother did nothing wrong.

    1. I mean when you think of it in terms of war, he chose his side, to stand by his father (even with him being an idiot). I didn’t agree with her killing them but she had to show strength.

      1. Yes you make a good point. Danerys in contrast to Cersei would certainly be a better choice of ruler even though Jon is the true heir I do not think he would want to be king. At least Dany is willing to compromise and listen to others and acknowledges that she has flaws. Cersei believes that her own warped view of the world is the only view and way to go.
